- High Definition TV
What is High Definition Television?
High Definition Television (HDTV) is a new TV system, with the most advanced digital technology.
It has 2 million pixels, 10 times more than standard television. It means that you can see all the details, even if there are many people on the screen, like a sports event or theater, with a quality similar to cinema or a good picture.
It comes in wide screen format, 16:9 instead of 4:3 in standard TV. It means you see the movies as they are.
The change in technology and quality, from the actual television to high definition television, can be compared to the change from black and white TV to color TV 50 years ago.
What do you need to watch High Definition?
A high definition TV set
With resolution to handle the 1080i system. Today all flat screen TV sets on the market are prepared or ready for high definition. The difference lies in the tuner: a TV set prepared for high definition has all the inputs for DVDs or satellite signal, but does not have the digital tuner to receive local off the air channels in high definition. The high definition satellite receivers have integrated a tuner with input for local antenna, so you don’t need to spend extra money for that tuner in a HD ready TV set.
High Definition signal
Obviously you will not have high definition quality if there are no programs in high definition. It would be like buying a color TV set, and only having access to programming in black and white. In Mexico City there are a few local channels in high definition.
In the rest of the country there are still no transmissions in high definition. Some cable TV systems can offer a few channels in HD. In the United States and Canada, there are more than 20 HD channels via satellite.
